Bargello National Museum, Florence :: ticket sales online with WeekendaFirenzeBargello National Museum starts as a magnificent civic palace. Begun in the 13th Century, later became the residence of the Bargello, Florence's head cop, and then in the 18th Century a prison. In 1865, when Florence was the capital of Italy, it was declared a national museum. Today it is the setting for works of sculpture (mainly from the grand ducal collections) by such renowned artists as Donatello, Tino da Camaino, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Baccio Bandinelli, and others. Also, many examples of "minor" Gothic decorative arts are housed in the Bargello Museum. The museum also houses a collection of goldwork and enamels from the Middle Ages to the 16th Century, as well as seals and various metal objects. |
